About this plant
The Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis) is aptly named for its delicate fronds, which are susceptible to frost, making it one of the first ferns to whither in autumn. Despite its sensitivity, it is a remarkably tough and adaptable perennial, especially suited for damp areas. Its sterile fronds are broadly triangular, deeply lobed, and a vibrant light green, resembling oak leaves. In contrast, the fertile fronds are upright, bead-like, dark brown, and persist through winter, offering architectural interest even after the growing season. This fern readily naturalizes and forms colonies, creating a lush, verdant carpet in appropriate conditions. It's an excellent choice for wetland gardens, shaded borders, or alongside ponds and streams.
Care & maintenance
Requires minimal care once established. Provide consistent moisture and enrich soil with organic matter. May spread aggressively in ideal conditions, so site thoughtfully or use barriers if spread is a concern. No serious pest or disease issues.
