About this plant
The Compact Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium 'Compacta') is a smaller, more refined version of its larger relative, perfect for adding texture and color to smaller gardens or defined spaces. Its glossy, holly-like leaves emerge with a reddish tint, maturing to a deep green that remains vibrant throughout the year. In early spring, a profusion of bright yellow flower spikes emerges, providing a vital early source of nectar for pollinators and adding a splash of sunshine to the awakening landscape. These flowers are followed by attractive, waxy blue-black berries that resemble tiny grapes, adding further ornamental value and providing a food source for birds. This resilient shrub is an excellent choice for foundation plantings, mass plantings, or as an accent plant in mixed borders, offering a low-maintenance solution for reliable, four-season beauty.
Care & maintenance
Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Prefers partial to full shade, but can tolerate more sun in cooler climates if kept consistently moist. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in its first year. Prune as needed after flowering to maintain desired size and shape. Generally pest and disease free.
