About this plant
Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila', commonly known as Dwarf Pampas Grass, offers the iconic feathery plumes and architectural form of traditional Pampas Grass in a more compact and garden-friendly size. This ornamental grass forms a dense clump of slender, arching, gray-green foliage, creating a striking presence in any setting. Beginning in late summer and continuing into fall, 'Pumila' produces magnificent, creamy-white, silken plumes that sway gracefully in the breeze, catching the light and adding an ethereal quality to your garden. These long-lasting plumes provide exceptional winter interest, standing tall against the stark backdrop of cooler months. Ideal for creating focal points, adding texture to mixed borders, or for mass planting in larger landscapes, Dwarf Pampas Grass is also an excellent choice for erosion control on slopes. Its strong, upright presence makes it a superb specimen plant or a dramatic addition to a coastal-themed garden.
Care & maintenance
Dwarf Pampas Grass is exceptionally low-maintenance once established. It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soils, as long as there is good drainage. While relatively drought-tolerant, occasional watering during prolonged dry spells will promote the best growth and plume production. Cut back foliage to about 6-12 inches from the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears to encourage a fresh, tidy appearance. Wear gloves when handling as the leaf blades can be sharp.
